Introduction

Climpson & Sons is one of the UK's most established specialty coffee roasters, operating out of East London since 2002. From their origins as a Broadway Market stall, they've grown into a full-scale roastery, training academy, wholesale supplier, and consumer brand. The site needed to reflect that evolution — communicating quality, ethics, and community at every touchpoint while driving meaningful commercial outcomes across subscriptions, retail, and B2B enquiries.

Problem statement

Specialty coffee is a market built on story, provenance, and craft — yet many roasters' digital presences fail to translate that depth into a compelling, navigable online experience. Climpson & Sons had over two decades of heritage, a B Corp certification, a wholesale operation supplying 300+ venues, and a growing direct-to-consumer offer — all competing for space on a single site. The challenge was to honour that richness without overwhelming the user, and to serve distinctly different audiences — from curious first-time buyers to wholesale partners and hospitality professionals — within one coherent system.

Solution & key elements

The design system was built to hold a brand with genuine depth — balancing editorial warmth with clear commercial architecture. A considered typographic hierarchy and restrained component language allow the storytelling to breathe without sacrificing usability. Product discovery was a key focus: guided tools including a coffee finder quiz and equipment finder quiz reduce decision fatigue for new users, embodying a user-centric design philosophy that meets people where they are rather than expecting them to already know what they want.

The site's information architecture cleanly separates the consumer and wholesale journeys, ensuring neither audience is asked to navigate content irrelevant to them — a best practice approach to multi-audience design that keeps conversion paths direct and purposeful. Trust and provenance are woven into the experience structurally, not as an afterthought — B Corp status, producer relationships, and sustainability credentials are surfaced in context throughout, reinforcing credibility at the points where it matters most.
